There’s a simple solution to all of this — well, simple in the technical sense. We need to build democratic institutions on the internet itself. I’m not sure if the internet is ready for its own electoral system, but it’s really the only way we’re going to see any sort of positive impact that technology might have on the political process.

Adjusting the algorithms and creating media partnerships will either do nothing or just recreate the same problems in the same way, unfortunately. What we need are products and features that actually empowers the user in a meaningful way. Otherwise we’re really just training users of technology to be seduced by people with strong personalities.
